General Tips and Strategies

  1. Whenever you see the journal button register an entry. Go to it and read it.
    • Though a few journal entries are simply used to build upon the story, almost every entry has some sort of hint as to what's in store for you or clue as to what you need to do.

  2. Keep your rifle loaded. Keep a finger on the 'L' key and press it after you fire a shot. This reloads quickly.
    • Nothing's more frustrating than when the click of your unloaded rifle scares away your dinner.

  3. Keep another finger on the "K" key. This will bring your knife to hand instantly.
    • This is good if a deadly animal is charging you and you don't have time to reload.
    • Remember, the knife only works when an animal is within striking distance.

  4. If you spend a considerable amount of time in a scene and never see an animal, chances are that very few animals frequent that area.
    • Make note of these places and don't waste your time hunting or trapping there.

  5. While waiting for animals to appear, use the Hand cursor to explore every scene.
    • Many neccassary items are 'hidden' in plain sight.
    • 'Scanning' the terrain with the hand cursor will help you notice things you wouldn't if you had your gun in hand at all times.

  6. Make a mental note or a real note, of the places you've left your traps behind.
    • It kind of stinks when you can't find your traps, especially if you're not having any luck hunting.

  7. Save frequently. Pressing the 'S' key does so quickly.
    • It's really frustrating when you've been playing for hours and a mountain lion sneaks up behind you and you have to do everything all over again.
    • Just remember, saving the game will make it impossible to go back and change something you wish you hadn't done.

  8. Buy Mountain Man:A New Beginning for a friend or relative!
    • Chances are they'll discover things that you haven't and vice-versa!
